DARPA seeks to create a floating aircraft carrier as seen in The Avengers

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, offer a low-cost and low-risk military advantage compared to manned aircrafts. Drones are easily replaced and don’t require years of training, nor are they anywhere as expensive to fabricate as a fighter jet. Their primary disadvantage, however, is their limited speed and range. DARPA seeks to resolve this issue by creating an aircraft carrier in the sky similar to the helicarriers used by S.H.I.E.L.D. in The Avengers.

According to ExtremeTech, the idea isn’t as far removed from reality as one would expect; the US Naval airships Macon (ZRS-5) and Akron (ZRS-4) were helium filled aircrafts used during the Second World War as floating hangers and air fields for small reconnaissance planes with limited range. Macon and Akron were approximately 1000-feet-long and could carry up to five F9C-2 Curtiss Sparrowhawk scout plans that were deployed and retrieved throw a trapdoor beneath the carriers.

“We want to find ways to make smaller aircraft more effective, and one promising idea is enabling existing large aircraft, with minimal modification, to become ‘aircraft carriers in the sky’,” said Dan Patt, DARPA program manager. “We envision innovative launch and recovery concepts for new UAS designs that would couple with recent advances in small payload design and collaborative technologies.”
To explore the development of the carrier-related technology, DARPA has issued a Request for Information (RFI), seeking technical, security, and business information from third party experts to determine the feasibility of implementing a launch and recover system similar to planes like the military transporter C-130.                                                   Via DARPA/ExtremeTech
